With dry conditions persisting at Mendip, implementing a smoking ban on the golf course was a necessary step to protect players, wildlife, and the course itself, especially knowing fires are breaking out in the region. With relief, Mendip is not alone in this decision, many clubs have taken similar stance.
Despite the lack of rain these last couple weeks, the course remains in good shape, receiving numerous positive comments. While other courses have moved to preferred lies, our greens team are working hard to keep the hot spots cool. They’ve added another round of wetting agent to the greens, with a sorrel roll followed by a cut with an iron behind to minimise the disturbance. Please know that the Greens Team change the hole placements as often as possible during this challenging dry spell.
In a recent conversation with the assistant greenkeeper, Dan, we discussed the impact of the weather on the course. He pointed out that excessive rain can create conditions as unfavourable as prolonged dry spells. We need a happy medium, but we’ve been experiencing extremes rather than balance in recent years. Nonetheless, Dan is dedicated to doing everything possible to ensure the best course experience for all.
On August 11th, members came together to help recover golf balls along the outskirts of the driving range, successfully collecting over 1,500 balls! To minimise the number of balls bouncing, the range hasn’t been cut recently, which also contributes to the health of the grass during high temperatures. The driving range manager is managing the somewhat untamed appearance, understanding that it’s a temporary necessity.
The team have edged the bunkers and increased raking to reduce compaction, but it’s been a tough battle as the sun continues to bake the traps.
Please continue to repair any pitchmarks, rake bunkers and replace any divots.
Thank you, and enjoy the course!
