What can I tell you that you don’t already know?
Well… let’s start with the obvious. If 2026 had a soundtrack so far, it would be the drumbeat of rain on the driving range roof. It feels like it’s rained every single day of the year - and the fairways are certainly convinced of it. So far, in 2026, over 300mm of rain has fallen on the course...and still counting!
When the course has had to close, the driving range has stepped up as our “unlikely” winter hero. We’ve kept range closures to an absolute minimum, and there’s been no limit on balls (yet).
However, the range is better suited for ducks than dimpled balls, but our staff and volunteers are out there in the elements, keeping it open whenever humanly possible (see photo). They know how much it means to you. Golf isn’t just a game - it’s routine, fresh air, laughter, a bit of therapy with a 7-iron. So, keep swinging! Summer will come; it always does.

On a brighter note, January’s planned irrigation project was successfully installed - yes, even in these conditions! It wasn’t exactly clean and tidy work given what the Greenkeeping team have been battling, but they’ve done a tremendous job keeping disruption to a minimum. When the sun does return, the course will be all the better for it.
And then came Saturday the 14th - not just Valentine’s Day, but a rare gift of sunshine. The course buzzed with life. Smiles returned and fairways echoed with the sound we’ve all missed – Shouts of FORE and the hum of happy golfers. Even a bad round wasn’t spoiling anyone’s day out, it was a reminder that Mendip will be thriving again before long.
We all love this game. And yes, when we can’t play, it’s hard. Golf gives us space, friendship, perspective. Therefore, if you’re missing it more than usual or just need a chat, reach out. The kettle’s always on at Mendip, we can talk sunshine, birdies, and big plans for next season.
The fairways will dry. The greens will roll. And when they do, it’ll feel even sweeter.
See you on the first tee - hopefully sooner than the forecast thinks.
Enjoy the course!
