Course Works Report – Review of 2025 and Progress Update

We are pleased to provide members with an update on the works undertaken on the course over the past year, along with the progress made as part of our ongoing commitment to improving playing conditions, sustainability, and long-term course health.

Irrigation Improvements

Significant progress has been made with the installation of new irrigation systems on a number of the tees. This investment allows for more targeted and efficient water use, improving turf consistency while reducing overall water consumption. Improved irrigation control also supports better recovery during dry periods and helps maintain presentation throughout the season. With further planned works taking place, the continued improvement of the tees will enhance the condition of the course.

Tree Work and Ecology

A comprehensive programme of tree work has been carried out, focusing on selective thinning, removal of diseased or unsafe trees, and improved light and air movement across key playing areas. These works not only enhance turf health but also contribute positively to the course’s ecology.
Where possible, habitat creation and biodiversity have been considered, supporting wildlife while maintaining the character and playability of the course.

Rainfall Overview

Weather conditions continue to play a major role in course management. Recorded rainfall totals highlight the contrast between recent seasons:

2024: 1,445.5 mm

2025: 837.5 mm

The high rainfall experienced in 2024 placed considerable pressure on turf and playing surfaces, making drainage, aeration, and proactive maintenance particularly important. However, with the exceptionally dry spring and hot summer experienced in 2025, the emphasis turned to water management and maintaining playing surfaces. With the improvements and investments made to the irrigation system as a whole, made this possible.

Greens Maintenance and Agronomy

The greens have been a key focus area, with a strong emphasis on sound agronomic practices to ensure long-term performance and resilience.

Works undertaken include:

  • Regular aeration to relieve compaction and improve gas exchange
  • Differing depths of aeration to a depth of 9 inches, aiding root development and drainage
  • Topdressing programme totalling approximately 90 tonnes, helping to dilute organic matter, smooth surfaces, and improve firmness
  • Ongoing monitoring and refinement of maintenance practices to support healthy, consistent putting surfaces

These processes are essential, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall, and are aimed at producing greens that perform well throughout the year. Further works will be done when conditions allow to improve playing surfaces and drainage.

Looking Ahead

The works completed over the past year form part of a long-term strategy to improve course conditioning, sustainability, and playability. Further projects, including bunker renovations and continued refinement of irrigation and agronomic programmes, will build on this progress.

We thank members for their patience and support while these essential works are carried out and look forward to continuing improvements across the course.

Enjoy the course!
