The season is getting closer... how exciting, we've been waiting for golf to arrive since the real doom and gloom set in roughly 100days ago, we're nearly out the other-side and I have no doubt that the course will not disappoint, give it time to heal and recover from the constant rain, this winter will soon be a distant memory.
Isn't it nice to have finally seen some sun though? It's just a little snippet again of what's yet to come, unfortunately I do need to report that this January, we received 152mm of rain, while February brought 188mm, sorry to dampen the vibe a little. It has not been ideal working or golfing conditions here, the resurfacing of paths had to be abandoned, ironically the ones furthest away from the green keepers' compound, 5,14 & 15.
However, since the sun has made a small appearance bringing healthy temperatures back to our soils, and firming the ground up once again, the big machines have been able to get back out onto the course in full force.
The greens have been aerated using solid tine aeration, followed by cutting, rolling, and applying a cold start granulated feed to promote healthy turf growth.
The tees have also been cut and aerated with solid tines to a depth of 5 inches, and a slow-release granulated feed has been applied to support their recovery.
Aprons and approaches have been cut and top-dressed. Some of the fairways and rough areas have also had a trim.
Tree planting has begun, with 170 silver birch trees purchased. Trees have so far been planted on holes 5, 13, and 30 along the side of the 18th and back of the green. In this process there has also been some removal of trees at the rear of the 6th green and 7th tee to improve the light and visibility on the 7th fairway, also aiding the 11th green and apron.
Black and yellow identifying posts have been installed down the left-hand side on the 16th hole, 7 in total, this is to help with finding the golf ball during the growing season when the bracken is at its thickest, which should help with the pace of play coming near the end of the round.
Exciting updates must also include the planned arrival of turf for the 4th medal tee, where the team will be fitting the new sprinkler heads to the system The new, green oak hole number finger posts are currently in production, hoping for them to be completed for our official golfing season.
Please continue to repair your pitch marks and replace your divots.
