28th July 2009 - Captain's Charity Day

One of the most important events in Mendip's year is Captain's Charity Day. It was held last Thursday, July 23rd. As always the weather caused concern, but Terry's prayer mat allowed the many of the competitors to have at least some of their round rain free, but almost everybody got the traditional soaking.
Once again local business sponsored holes, teams or donated prizes and we thank them in these difficult financial times. This year there were 47 teams entered. Following the golf, entertainment was provided by local musician Guy Johnson. The auctioneer, Tom Killen, persuaded those attending to part with over £1,000 for items which included a special Darren Clark Driver. All this fund raising enabled our Captain, Terry Pavey, to present a cheque for £11,500 to John Carter, Chairman of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, Terry's chosen charity. This is a fine example of sport helping those in need. Not only did the golfers have a great day out but there were lots of prizes to be won for skill and in the raffle. Our thanks to everybody who contributed in any way to the success of the day, but most of all to Terry who worked tirelessly for his chosen charity.

On Friday the Seniors competed for the Bill Freeman Trophy. Conditions were not easy and the standard scratch went up one to 71. However this difficulty was not apparent to Abe Fukuyama, who, despite some wayward shots, amassed a fine 40 points to easily win from Gerry Jestico, who scored a surprising 38 points, to edge out Phil Moody with a similar score. Fourth place was taken by Jeff Hodder with 37 points. Abe has now been cut back to 14 handicap, but many think that 12 would be a fairer proposition - look at the board!

On Saturday another competition, the MENDIP BOWMAKER. This is a medal competition with two nett scores out of three to count on each hole. There were always going to be some bandits around and this once again proved to be the case, the winners were 15 under par.

Winners: R. Wells, T. Chivers & M. Jones - 127
2nd: B. Francis, B. Smith & E. Jordan - 128 (B9)
3rd: C. Jackson, J. Abdy & T. Taylor - 128.
