The big event this last week was the Club Championship on Saturday. The day dawned bright,
but rather windy. The course was in great condition with the greens running true and fast.
The morning round produced no surprises, except that the scoring was higher than expected.
George Morgan led the field with 73, followed by James Taylor with 75, and a number on 76.
In the afternoon scoring by some was better, but George fell away with a 78. After a 76
in the morning Neil Hillier played really well in the afternoon to score a sub par 69 to win
easily on 145. This is Neil's second Club Championship, he previously won in 2003.
The Frost Cup, for the best nett over 36 holes, was keenly contested, but Rob Paige produced
two fine rounds of 79 and 77 to win by two strokes from Keith Thomas.

The day before the Club Championship the seniors played for their only medal cup- the Ollie
Parfitt Cup. Conditions were not easy, but many of the scores were very creditable. A few weeks
ago I commented on the fact that few players are able to equal their age with their gross score,
but on Friday Don Burrows went one better. He scored an astonishing 75 gross (61 nett) to beat
his age by one clear stroke. A brilliant performance, but at a cost of two strokes reduction
in his handicap. Despite this he is still trying to get down to his wife's handicap!
Others who had handicap reductions were Brian Francis, Ray Ashman, Keith Gadsden, Keith Brown
and Tim Bristow.
Winner Don Burrows 75-14=61
2nd Brian Francis 78-12=66
3rd Ray Ashman 87-21=66
4th Keith Gadsden 77-10=67
5th Keith Brown 81-13=68
There were 8 two spots.
In the Seniors Match at Mendip against Enmore Park the weather was very hot and humid. The result was a very satisfactory half, with 4 games each.
In the SHOWERING CUP, presented by former President Keith Showering, of Babycham fame, there was a fine performance by Darren Vowell who has been threatening to score well all season. Interestingly his young son, Jack, also had a good round, but just missed out on the prizes with a 68 nett.
Winner Darren Vowell 73-8=65
2nd James Baughan 79-13=66
