Mendip News

16th June 2009

On Friday in very pleasant conditions visitors from 27 different clubs travelled to Mendip for the Seniors Invitation. Not only did we have players from the local clubs but also from as far afield as Lyme Regis, Staddon Heights, Hockley, Bridport and even St. Enodoc. All were full of praise about the condition of the course, and for those who had not played it before the expansive views. There were lots of good scores, five pairs had 44 points, but Mike Brobson (for the second time) proved a worthy winner with 46 points, just beating Norman Shillabeer on the count back. However Norman did manage to get two of ten two's scored.

1st Mike Brobson/M. Saunders (Farrington) 46 (C/B)
2nd Norman Shillabeer/Max Lines (West Wilts) 46
3rd Terry Russell/M. Crisp (North Wilts) 45
4th Geoff Mosley/ R. Rawcliff (Long Ashton) 44 (C/B)

The Sims Cup was played for on Saturday in pleasant conditions. Early on our top golfer, George Morgan, had had a fine 65(nett 66). Unfortunately once again, as had happened in the Jubilee Cup just a couple of weeks ago, he was pipped at the post by a senior golfer with a much higher handicap. However with two 36 hole competitions (Mendip Vase and the Club championship) coming up I am sure George will do well, particularly in the Club Championship.
One member, who was really happy on Saturday, was Roger Goodliff, who had his first 'hole in one' at Mendip.
Members are reminded that the course will be closed on two of the next three Saturdays, except to competitors.

On Sunday our Captain, Terry Pavey, took a team to Stoneham to play in the Tripartite Match against Stoneham and Tidworth for the trophy presented last year to celebrate our joint centenaries. The match was played in glorious sunshine and in tremendous spirit, but resulted in a repeat of the initial match, a win for Stoneham with 44 points. Mendip were second with 39 points and Tidworth had 37 points. Terry presented the Stoneham Captain, Bob Houghton, with the trophy and it was generally agreed that the match had cemented relationships between the three clubs. Next year the match will be at Tidworth and in 2011 at Mendip.
