Ladies Raise Money
Forty Four Mendip Ladies raised £77 towards the Captain’s Charity, Macmillan Cancer Support on Tuesday.
They played a nine hole Stableford competition and produced some very good scores. The winner was Carol Mosley with
Kay O’Connor coming second they both scored 22 points with Carol winning on count back. Third and fourth
places were also decided on count back Edwina Willis just beating Patricia Rawlins, both scoring a commendable
19 points. There will be two more charity Stablefords in February to raise funds for the Captains Charity.
Men's Triple Six
The first Men’s competition of 2012 took place at the Weekend and saw 108 gentlemen compete. The Triple Six
competition consisted of a Stableford format where pairs played 4 BBB for the first six holes, Greensomes on the
second six holes and Foursomes on the final six holes. This fun format seemed to suit ‘in form’
George Morgan and his partner Neil Onslow, when they returned with a fantastic total of 43 points. Second went
to Paul Smith and Andrew Parfitt with 42 points and third were Stephen Duck and Simon Whittle on 41 points.
The two spot entry was well supported with £108 up for grabs. Six lucky pairings shared the money ~
Adrian Brooking-Clark & Sandy Keen, Neville Harvey & Stephen Pearson, Dave Pilbeam & John Stembridge,
Richard Streeter & Ian Perkins, Kevin Mattock & Peter French, Selwyn Rees & Steve Reeder. Well done
to all that took part and supported the competition on such a cold and frosty morning at The Mendip.
Captain's Drive In
The Captain’s Drive In took place at the Weekend which sees the start of the new Captain’s
reign and a new golfing year. The recent wet weather meant there was doubt as to whether the Drive-In would
take place but luckily the weather was perfect with few clouds in the sky and the sun shining brightly adding that
element of warmth. There were twenty eight teams of four on the course, waiting for a shotgun start and competing for
a wide variety of prizes. On completion of the competition, Terry Russell-Club Captain, Elaine Kitchenham-Ladies
Captain and Colin Davies- Seniors Captain then drove their balls up the first hole to finish proceedings on the golf
course. There was a full attendance for an excellent lunch followed by the initiation ceremonies and prize giving.
All three Captains’ will support the MacMillan Cancer Support as their charity for the year 2012.
The main prize winners were:
Men’s Team – Brian Francis, Phil Moody, Brian Smith, Eric Jordan
Ladies Team- Jan Fukuyama, Sylvia Stephenson, Margaret Hawker, Margaret Allen
Mixed Team- Patricia Rawlins, June Millington, Martin Wilkins, Tony Griggs
Christmas Fun at Mendip Golf Club
The Annual Christmas Dinner at The Mendip was a sell out and was enjoyed by over 100 Members and their guests. The gorgeous three course meal provided by Andy and Beth in The Clubhouse was a fantastic start to the festive evening. Guest Band ‘ Handsome Norman ‘ fired up the music for the second half of the night, getting everyone on the dance floor before the evening drew to a close.
The Fussell rolling quiz show continued apace on Friday, 16th December, with good support for the fancy dress
competition. The raffle was well supported with plenty of prizes for the lucky winners - thanks to all the sponsors
and helpers on the evening.
We are still not sure who Alan Fussell was meant to be on the night but he cut a fair dash in his fancy dress outfit.
Frosty the Snowman made an appearance in the shape of Dave Pilbeam However, the winner was Pete Davies who scared
us all as ghostly Jacob Marley.

Christmas is for Children at Mendip Golf Club
A Charity Quiz Night at The Mendip Golf Club was a sell out attracting over 100 people on 27 tables who enjoyed a
successful evening in aid of Children in Need. It was really encouraging to see the club house so full of people.
The evening saw £400 raised from the sale of raffle tickets; an auction of a bottle of whisky donated by one
of the raffle ticket winners was successfully bid for by Andy and Beth for the princely sum of £25; and
prize money donated by winning teams on the night. In addition, HSBC generously doubled the amount raised making
a total of £800 for Children in Need.
A big thank you to: Andy, Beth and their team for their efforts in providing food at half time and keeping busy at
the bar; Alan Fussell and Paul Smith for producing the questions; Mary Fussell, Elaine Smith and Becky Hooper for
marking the questions; and Ray Smith for selling the raffle tickets; but most of all to those people who attended
and generously donated to the evening's success.
Next on the agenda was The Children’s Christmas Party with over forty children attending.
The children (and some adults) enjoyed an hour's entertainment, courtesy of Keith's Magical Entertainment.
There was plenty of participation from the children who assisted the magician with much of the magic.
Santa arrived via the first fairway aboard his magical fairy-light buggy and entered via the patio doors to the
delight of the assembled children.
Santa then took his position and distributed the presents.
Thanks should be recorded to: Selwyn Rees for his starring role; Andy, Beth and staff for providing tea; Alan
Fussell, Dave Pilbeam, Ray Smith, Sue Needham and Mary Fussell for their assistance during the afternoon.

Goymer wins at The Players!
John Goymer & Danny White tied for first place in the final individual G&S PGA Medal of 2011 at the Players
Club near Bristol. They both returned scores of 5 under par 67 which secured victory from what was the largest field
of the season so far.
The recent trend of Mother Nature being kind to the G&S Pro’s continued as the weather was bright and dry
with just enough breeze to make the players think as they negotiated the Codrington course. Following a day of rain
preceding the event the competitors played from the club’s blue winter tees but found the course offering
very little if any run on the ball. With some areas of the layout very wet it was decided to allow the players to
lift clean and drop their ball in the rough if they wished in addition to the usual preferred lies rule on the
fairways. The greens however drained very well and putted nicely for the time of year with plenty of birdies and
eagles being marked down on a day of low scoring.
Swindon based Danny White, who represents the host club, was the first to post the winning score. His card was bogey
free over the outward half with two birdies being scored at the 2nd and the 9th. A hat trick of birdies from the 11th
moved him to 5 under before his only mistake of the day came at the hazard strewn par 5 15th hole which he bogied.
This shot was regained two holes later and a closing par saw him round in 67. Goymer, from The Mendip, was playing
in the next group to finish and matched White’s effort with a typically solid round. He, like White, birdied
the 2nd and 9th but also picked up a shot at the 7th to turn at 3 under. A wayward iron shot at the short 10th led
to his first bogey of the day but he corrected that with a birdie at the next hole. He then chipped in at the downhill
par 5 12th for an eagle three to move himself to 5 under. One more bogey was to come at the 14th but his seventh and
final gain of the round was marked down at the very next hole to give him his first win of the campaign. His 5 birdies
and an eagle also saw him top his winnings up with the birdie sweep pot.
Order of Merit leader Ross Langdon missed the event and the chasing pack closed his lead at the top down to just 2.5
points going into the Christmas break. Leading that pack is Brean’s Andrew March who is enjoying his best ever
start to a G&S PGA season. He handed in a 6 birdie round, two of which came crucially at the final two holes, of
68 to take a share of third spot with Farrington Amateur Tom Small. Small handed in a bogey free 4 under par round with
his birdies coming on 4 of the 5 par 5 holes. Bath’s Ross Jones rounded out the prizewinners with a 3 under par
69. No less than 6 other players in the field either broke or matched the par of 72 on the day.
Snaith & Fairclough are on their way!
Mendip Members Mike Snaith and Ian Fairclough are celebrating after winning an all expenses paid trip to The Algarve
in January courtesy of The Volvo Matchplay Championship. The Mendip pairing entered the competition which started out
regionally. They recorded wins against pairs from The Kendleshire, Weston Super Mare, Stockwood Vale, and finally
Frome to qualify for the Finals at Bristol & Clifton Golf Club. The format changed to Better Ball Stableford on
this occasion and this seemed to suit the boys when they recorded 38 points and came second in the field. Out of 1600
pairs, Mike and Ian now travel to Vale do Lobo in The Algarve to compete in the last 16.
Mendip Celebrate A Successful Season
We held our Annual Presentation Evening in the Clubhouse on 26th November where almost 100 Members and their guests
celebrated a successful year on the Golf Course. Trophies were presented throughout the evening by Captains Steve
Rawlings and Chris Williams. One of the main highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Pickeridge Bowl,
a scratch competition, which was won earlier in the year at Burnham and Berrow GC. Pictured are winning team members
from left, David Cox, Neil Onslow, Matt Rawlings, George Morgan, Paul French ( captain ) , Pete Davies and Paul Reakes.
Well done to the boys, another fine example of the high standard of golf that has been played this season.
